Switching your mortgage insurance in France (substitution)

How borrower insurance works in France, how to choose another insurer and what the bank checks.

Is it compulsory?

Not by default, but the lender may require borrower insurance (assurance emprunteur) for a mortgage.

You can choose your insurer

You may use an insurer other than the bank’s partner, as long as the contract meets the criteria in the bank’s personalised information form (fiche personnalisée).

Changing later (substitution)

You can change insurer at any time after signing the loan. First get the lender’s agreement on the new contract, then send the termination request to the current insurer.

Equivalent guarantees

The lender checks that the new contract keeps the same level of cover. The form sets up to 11 criteria for death, disability and incapacity, and up to 4 for job loss. If the lender accepts, it has 10 working days to amend the loan. If it refuses, it must give its reasons, and your current insurance is not cancelled.

Foreigners and non-residents

Many insurers do not accept non-residents or foreigners. We specialise in these profiles. Use our quote and tick the mortgage insurance question.
